A week of panic, good work, late nights and alot of fun

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

The new maltalunch website was launched just a week ago. It’s the result of 6 weeks hard work by the excellent development team over at ActiveBoxSite in West Java Indonesia – Thanks for all good work Erwin!

It has been tough fixing all bugs, getting user accounts back in place and importing the old blog. Felt abit nostalgic looking back at the very first blog post written back in 2007 for at that time “The lunch”. Then we lived on a simple free Google Blogspot address whilst now the muscles are on a custom PHP cms.

Hope you like the new site and feel free to come back with relevant feedback. And don’t forget to follow us on twitter.com/maltalunch and join our facebook fan page

Maltalunch: Power to the user

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

Although my article in today’s issue of the Technology Sunday was emphasizing the business opportunity on facebook, the moral of the story was to empower your user network.

By providing you with a great online and collaborative platform for sharing restaurant recommendations, maltalunch has empowered its community.

 Power to the user

What’s hot in the pot? Gordy writes the healthy foodblog Pimpthatfood.com

“Make it a daily challenge to find ways to move your body. Climb stairs if given a choice between that and escalators or elevators. Walk your dog; chase your kids; toss balls with friends, mow the lawn.”

Real reviews by real people – We’re taking new shape!

Friday, January 16th, 2009
After having written this blog post (with some great help by friends of ours) we’re changing the concept of maltalunch.com into a community site were you and everyone else will post your own real reviews, photos, comments and ratings.
The idea is taken from success stories as the US based yelp.com,  qype.co.uk and the Swedish reco.se.
We want to bring this concept of a user generated content website to Malta, and what better way to do it than with restaurants?
Stay tuned, we’re launching soon!

Newly opened in St. Julians – Dr Juice has the remedy for your illness

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

I was just about to show my newly arrived house guests around the promenade between Spinola Bay and our destination, Paradise Exiles. We needed to stop somewhere for lunch and we didn’t even get 100 meters away from Spinola Bay when I saw the big colourful sign of Dr Juice, a new opened juice bar right in my neighbourhood! For months I have been asking my local friends if there are any juice bars where they serve proper fresh 100% real juices and smoothies. No such luck, until now.

Dr Juice opened their doors for business on August the 8th of 2008. They don’t only serve beverages but also have a nice range of wraps, sandwiches and salads. The owner is a very nice couple who really stick out. Not only because they have a brilliant and very much needed business idea in the form of a healthy restaurant and juice bar, but also because they are so damn nice.

This couple stands out when it comes to service and delivery and they are not afraid to be humble and forthcoming when things are taking to long, like they did this day due to the chef being a little bit late. The time the owner took to talk to us, asking how everything was and making sure we all got exactly what we ordered in the confusion and just taking a moment to introduce himself was indeed something you don’t see often in Malta. Personally I love it because it shows that he invests not only his time and money but also his heart into what he’s doing. That alone makes me come back.
Let’s talk about the food. I ordered a spicy tuna wrap (3.2 euro) with a berry smoothie (3.5 euro). The food is prepared when ordered so I’m sure they wouldn’t mind adding or removing anything you might not like. As for me, I wanted to see what the original composition was all about so I took it as it was.

The wrap was very well prepared and it didn’t have that anticlimax one can experience sometimes where everything is thrown in the middle and you spend the first 2 bites chewing bread. Every bite was indeed a spicy tuna wrap bite and I loved it. Being a person who loves spicy food I think they could have added just a little bit more zing to the tuna, giving it cause for its name.

Once you get to the final third of the wrap you might want to grab some tissue, or make sure you are leaning over a plate because it will drip some lovely juices. Some might think it looks or feels soggy but I love to have the final bites being an orgy of all tastes mixed together, but it would suck for that sad person who is eating the wrap while driving a car.

The smoothie was ice cold, giving me brain freeze from the very first sip… I loved it! When it’s 35 degrees outside you will love anything that cools you down a bit. The berry’s really jump out at you right away and the taste never fades or gets boring. For my taste the size is a little bit “supersized” so I shared it with a friend. But if you really want to hammer down on a cold beverage, the “Berry Nice Smoothie” is absolutely amazing and worth every cent.

I am definitely going back to try more of their juices, smoothies, health drinks and various foods. Not only because it was absolutely delicious and fresh but also because we at Maltalunch.com love good service. So if this fits symptoms Dr Juice has the remedy for you. See you next time and until then, eat well and spread love, or spread well and eat love, or eat spread and love well. Cheers!

Good food in Sicily?

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

So we were told!

After a not so pleasant journey with the Virtue ferries over to Pozzallo (the whole ship was a layer of puke) with continued up to Taormina, our end destination.

We tried a local Trattoria serving Salcicia served with oven roasted potatoes. For €22 it was nothing that blew my taste buds away. However the local beer from nearby Messina was really good.

Do you love your job?

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

The ever growing popularity of Greger’s own kitchen has taken the path of Pasta Salcicia. Fresh Maltese sausage, garlic, spring onions, chili, tomato sauce and a hint of persil in a fabulous blend.

By the way, stepped by the clock repair shop with my new watch that needed to be adjusted. Having a surfaced discussion I started to ask some questions about his watch. “Nah, it’s nothing special. I had an old strap, 30-years old now, that I put on a newer 10 EUR watch… you know, watches doesn’t interest me at all….”

One day later I still don’t know what to say.

However, what I do know is that Greger will travel south to the island of Sicily early tomorrow morning. Hopefully we’ll avoid all the crap places and go straight for the best Tratorias!

Pizza prego amigo’s….(!?)

Do it with an espresso

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

Say hello to all the great Baristas out there! There are three great things in the world worth walking for: Women, Love and espresso.

Even though all three can be bought with money a real espresso preferable needs both women and love to be enjoyed.

Where do I drink my espresso? Café Catania in Sliema is a great weekday pit-stop bar to check-in after work. €1.20 and it’s yours – prepared to perfection by women and love.

Friday chiller – Caipirinha

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

Welcome to the first weekly Friday chiller post – we’ll every Friday around 5pm post what we think is the drink of the evening. Not to disappoint our trusted readers we’ll start off with a classic Caipirinha (whhooo that took some googleing to find the correct spelling…).

This Brazilian national cocktail is based on Cachaça which is Brazilian rom distilled from sugar cane. The word “Caipirinha” is the diminutive version of the word “caipira“, which refers to someone from the countryside, being an almost exact equivalent of the American English hillbilly.

How to make your Friday even better (recipe of 1 drink):

- Make sure to have a bottle of premium Cachaça (My favorite Cachaça is Pitu which has a distinctive and flowery taste.);
- 1 lime fruit;
- 12 ice cubes;
- 3 tea spoons of cane sugar;
- Old fashioned glass

Start by muddling lime and sugar in the glass until all juices are out from the fruit. Crush the ice (if you don’t have an ice crusher you can put the ice in a towel and slam with a hammer). Fill the glass with crushed ice to the top. Poor 5cl of Pitu and fill up with even more ice. Stir and serve!

Next Friday we’ll show you something more spectacular, stay tuned :)
